Too Desi Too Queer: Shorts (part of Birmingham Indian Film Festival)

This year's Birmingham Indian Film Festival film at the Electric is a series of short films.

Dear Dad is about a gay man visiting his dying dad in the hospital after having stayed away from his disproving family. We watch to see what the reaction will be from his Dad.

Look Like You features a woman visiting the adoptive parents of her biological son.

Shoot Your Shot is the one I really enjoyed. It follows the conversations of two teenagers figuring out life’s endless turns and it has a beautiful ending.

Her Canvas is a very short non-dialogue film seemingly about a woman reflecting.

Discovering Kali - 25 years of the Legendary Club

After these 10-minute shorts, we are introduced to the much longer documentary about The Kali Club, a night for Asian queers that I had never heard of and was delighted to learn about. The film interviews its 2 pioneering female founders along with its loyal regulars who describe how much it clearly meant to them then and now.

PS I’ve trawled the internet and can find no photos of Discovering Kali so I’ve taken a still from the trailer
