Film - She Said

Another film which came and went at the cinema and was top of the list for watching on board a flight. BA’s entertainment system still had connection problems but it’s slightly better now than the flight out.

This is a whistleblower/investigative journalism film on how the Me Yoo movement escalated after the first few women spoke about predatory behaviour in Hollywood. The film starts the same as the story with Rose McGowan who came forward all the way back in 2017 and included many more including Ashley Judd and Gwyneth Paltrow who both appear as themselves.

Actors were reluctant to speak knowing how it has already affected their careers due to being blacklisted by such a powerful film man. So the journalists track down former assistants in the company who also haven’t been able to work in the industry since.

Based on the book by the two New York Times journalists Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey (Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan) the film takes us through how they uncovered the story. We see them flying around the world to sensitively encouraged the women to talk and help bring the person (who I will not name here) to the courts and eventually prison. Even after seeing this, I cannot imagine the pain endured by the wronged women and even of the journalists who endure threats to their lives.

I remember the article being published in 2017 that prompted 82 other women to come forward and then everything changed.

It’s always strange seeing actors play real people and even more so when those people are alive and still doing the same job. Even more interesting to see actors playing actors and this is such an important story that needed to be told on the big screen.
