Movie – The Imposter
I had paid the usual amount of attention before deciding on seeing this film so of course I didn’t realise this is a documentary. The true story of how a 20-something old Mediterranean dark-haired, accented man fooled an American family into thinking he was there long-lost American, blue-eyed blond son.It sounds ridiculous and we’d never buy it as fiction unless it was a comedy with one or more of those American actors that only and constantly appear in comedies. However, this documentary features the man in question, plus the family, police officers and government agents all of whom are fooled to a degree.About half way through, with the comments of federal officers and police aiding us, we start to wonder if this Texan family had indeed (accidentally) killed their son, reported him missing and that’s the only explanation as to why they were eager to have this French man back in their lives as their long-lost son.The imposter clearly has had a troubled life he must have had to live whilst hiding from all the stories he has built around him.And who do we believe? The authorities who have let it get this far and then start doubting he is who he says he is? The family who swear that they thought he was their son, despite the obvious physical differences? One person we don’t believe of course is the Imposter but we know that from the film’s title.Worth a watch.7½/10Smile factor 7/10
