Movie: Kingsman: The Secret Service
Wow, after seeing four distinctly not laugh-a-minute movies in a row, just the thought of seeing this for my Friday film fix put a smile on my face.I had high hopes and it did not let me down.In fact, I loved it before any dialogue had happened purely from the opening song and the titles. For those, like me, who place no importance on the spy movies that this is taking the proverbial out off, it is a complete joy. I also wont know any of the reference points to James Bond et all that I assume may have been made during these fast-moving two hours. It doesn’t disappoint with the clichés either; Colin Firth has to play the upper middle class spy in a Saville Row suit, Samuel L Jackson has to wear a cap sideways and be the mad, bad tech millionaire (who can’t stand the site of blood so had a crazy side kick to do the dirty jobs) and there has to be an east end society drop-out turned spy that gets the Bond girl. There are so many little quirks – blink and you miss them – but I particularly liked how the cut glass accent changed to regular urban London when one realises he’s been poisoned. It’s a bit like the childhood dialect returning when people have had a lot to drink!A feel good film with gadgets and Mark Strong, who is not playing a baddie like he did in Kick Ass (the same people made this film). A winner for me.8½/10Smile factor 10/10
