Movie – Carol (7/10)
This could have actually made in the 1950s.It’s an unlikely story whichever you look at it. A 20 something, dreamy, Audrey look-alike (very deliberately I feel) who meets an older, married high society lady, Carol (Cate Blanchett).Thereze (Rooney Mara) works in a department store where any creativity is very much stifled and lives alone which seems amazingly independent for the era. She’s in a relationship with a man who thinks it is leading somewhere but she doesn’t cherish him.Instead, she is fascinated by the glamorous Carol – who I’m pretty much only wore grey throughout the film - and eventually embarks on a relationship with her. It’s not as miserable as I anticipated, I thought it would be a little about getting love and lots of pain of heartbreak when its gone but its almost the other way round. Perhaps her already estranged husband and his family didn’t want the scandal embarrassing their family name? It all comes to a head when reaching a decision on the couple’s child post-divorce.It turns out to be an interesting study of a taboo relationship, in more ways than one, in the 1950s.7/10Smile factor 7/10@RickieWrites
