Movie: Calvary
After watching some colourful movies, seeing Calvary while away in Scotland for the Easter weekend was a stark awakening.Billed as a dark comedy, I mainly saw the dark with a good splattering of humour. The opening scene is of an Irish priest (Brendan Gleeson) in the confession box hearing that he is going to be murdered in seven days to avenge the awful wrong doings of the catholic church. This sets the scene in that the film is not going to shy away from this topic but it does show Father James as being an honourable, good and ultimately human priest. He goes about his business during the week, while trying to find who is the confessor that is going to kill him next Sunday?A widower, his daughter arrives from London after a failed suicide attempt and all matter of characters surround them from the village. There’s a great scene where they are all in the pub at the same time that leaves us all wondering which one is going to pull the trigger? There’s the chain-smoking doctor, the bent old copper, the filthy rich banker and the local butcher and his wife plus her boyfriend among them. All in all a dark film, sad film with doesn’t shy away from the story that needs to be told. Look out for the star of the show, the priest's dog.I won’t say I’d want to watch it again though.8/10Smile factor 6/10
