Film: Rye Lane

The most unusual film I have seen in a while. It stars a vibrant South London supported by a great cast of characters we either laugh with or laugh at. Or commiserate with or feel sorry for.

Of course we immediately fall in love with the two leads who meet in the most unusual way. Seemingly opposites but how can they be when they wear pink and purple shoes respectively?

There may be some playful nods to Richard Curtis films tucked in here of which I am not the hugest of fans. This film has fashion, food, music, art and film; a colourful, cultural explosion.

A special mention for the egg and soldiers scene - gosh his parents are adorable.

I knew it was a short film going in but it felt like it as it was packed with dialogue - verbal and non-verbal. And every shot, close up or zoomed out seemed perfect. Nothing was excessive, it was all just right. And my goodness does it make you want to go to Peckham. (Filed under ‘words I have never said’)

It is so wonderful to see a film that is filled with joy and yet zero tension. Even though it is built on the premise of bad breakups, it is brilliantly funny throughout.

Superb. I’ll see it again. (and again).
