Film - Onward
A modern-day tale of wizards and magic from Pixar (Toy Story, The Incredibles). Elf brothers Ian and Bailey are given a gift of an old wizard stick as instructed by their dead father. It comes with a spell that brings him back for just one day. However, it only half works and so the boys set about seeking out all the elements they need to complete the spell, followed by the walking legs of their deceased dad.
The younger, Ian, is reluctant although excited about meeting the father he never knew. The older, Barley, is a keen wannabee wizard and has been waiting for this opportunity to prove magic is real his whole life. Learning to cast spells as they go I love that the old wizard bar they thought was going to be a resource, the Manticore's Tavern, is now a family theme restaurant.
I’ve always loved a ‘kids’ movie anyway and now these films are more needed than ever. Onward ticks of the usual family film elements; family are what matters, the importance of self-belief and that a dad is more than just someone who fathered you - the last one is especially unique to Onward.
The film, of course, made me think about what I will do if I could have one more day with my mum. But, I also know, she knows.
