Film: My Heavenly City
My Heavenly City revolves around 3 stories of immigrants in New York who unknowingly and loosely overlap. I guess as a way of making a film out of the 3 stories.
The lonely student whose parents are always happy to have her back but she finds fulfilment and an income as a translator. Although warned by the agency that her placements can be emotionally challenging and she needs to stay neutral, she finds that tricky.
Then the two students, a fashion student from Singapore and the other from Taiwan, united through a love of street dancing and hip-hop.
The third and perhaps most intriguing the architect and his wife coping with a child who is has been diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome. 7-year-old Jasper is prone to violent attacks on his mum, his primary carer. We meet him during one of these and also met his grandfather who doesn’t believe in mental illness.
My memory of My Heavenly City will probably be of meeting the fan club of one of the actors keen to celebrate this momentous occasion at the Odeon. It’s a good turnout in one of the more comfortable screens.
