Book - Rising to the Surface, by Lenny Henry

I loved the first memoir which was clearly written as one of 3 books. Part 2 takes us through the 1980s when Lenny in his 20s. Rising to the Surface is a masterclass in how to get onto TV. From the creative process, to pitching ideas to getting the right team around you, this is not your standard memoir.

This is the first book I have got out of the library since before the pandemic. Having given up my Cineword Unlimited membership, I’m using my Friday afternoons differently - at least until #FilmFriday comes back. So I popped in and saw this displayed front and centre on the Black History month stand. It’s good news as my pile of bought books to be read is toddler-high. I had to go abroad for work and took this  - a hard back - with me. It’s a quick easy read.

I can’t get past the fact that his sibling bought 4 uninvited guests to his pricey Savoy wedding that he spent 6 months summer season away from home to pay for. Or why they needed to have the wedding at the Savoy, and why it needed to have so many slebs they hardly know.

(I guess cos they were young and foolish and dazzled).

However, as with Who Am I?, part 2 is warm, funny and insightful.
