Book - How to Avoid a Climate Disaster - by Bill Gates
The Solutions We Have and the Breakthroughs We Need
Maybe it’s because of the way the world is right now, but this book makes me more optimistic rather than less. It really ought to be about the end of the world and yet it is full of hope.
There are some astonishing facts, such as China provides 5th of the world's wheat, rice & corn and it’s making more cement in the 21st century than the US did in the whole of the 20th century. Also, that as the world gets hotter, mosquitos will start living in more places so much like the pandemic, maybe we'll do something about it then - when it starts to affect us.
Evil plastics are not as damaging to the atmosphere but they don't degrade and in one of the many only-in-America moments, gasoline is cheaper than a latte, maple syrup, bottled water, laundry detergents, red bull & olive oil.
I do like the fact that other than using their millions (and those of their friends) the Gates family are doing their bit at home too by reducing the number of cheeseburgers they eat.
I got tired of hearing the phrase poor countries and my head spun a bit hearing about how many billions the Gates Foundation have donated hear there and everywhere. Overall, I’m optimistic & hopeful that innovation will happen and we do need to absolutely continue to do our bit and demand better from those who govern us. I for one am sick of seemingly taking all the responsibility for recycling. If my council had anything to do with it, only paper bottles and cans will get recycled (seriously, that’s all we are meant to be putting in the overflowing bins in my block). If you don’t want us to buy it, stop people selling it.
