Movie – The Grand Budapest Hotel
I imagine this modern slapstick film to transcend all tastes as it’s just quirky enough, funny and different from anything else around. With an extraordinary cast, most are just on screen for a few minutes. It’s the concierge (Ralph Fienness) and his Lobby Boy, (the also brilliant,Tony Revolori)their term not mine, who are in virtually every shot. The part of Gustave is made for Fienness who plays the camp, womanising, master concierge with such ease you’d think that character has always been inside him. How they made this film while keeping a straight face is a mystery as is the whodunit plot….Gustave is suspected of murdering one his beloved elderly guests, “she’s 84, I’ve had older” and sent to prison. I always love hotel movies as I adore seeing good customer service in action, the same reason I love Mr Selfridge currently on our telly box. And while incarcerated for a crime he didn’t commit, Gustave remains a gentleman, while swearing like a trooper when necessary. It’s always hilarious to hear swearing in an upmarket accent.Just like a five star hotel, the attention to detail is immense; blink and you’ll miss a joke.An adorable film. 8/10Smile factor 10/10 Coffee rating: Macchiato
