Movie: Spy
A British spy comedy caper. Based in America, filmed across Europe and with mostly British actors. The story is of a red-hot desk based agent (my fave, Melissa McCarthy) at the CIA whose job it is to keep her partner in the field alive by being the protective voice in his ear. And save the world from evil arms dealers.Except, she pleads with the agency boss (my fave, Allison Janney) to go in the field herself when the agent she was working with is killed. Of course, we know he isn’t actually dead because he’s played by Jude Law, one of the leads. McCarthy plays it cool as she is asked to disguise herself as the always single cat lady or down-trodden mother against the uber glamorous, wealthy arms dealer she believes was the last person to see her agent pal/crush alive.Interestingly, as the boss, Allison Janney is on-screen as much as Jason Statham, I thought, (playing an idiotic, but dedicated agent) and Law, but doesn’t get anywhere near the top billing. And yet, in every production I‘ve seen her in I would find it hard to view anyone else play her part.If I’d just read about this film I may have given it a miss and yet it’s all star lavishness should be a draw. Hoping it wasn’t one of those where the funniest moments are in the trailer, I pop along to see it. It turns out the trailer jokes in context are much funnier and there is a side helping of laughter too. High point: 50 Cent. (honestly!)7½/10Smile factor 8/10
