Movie: Pacific Rim
I wouldn’t have minded this one slipping down the watch list but then everyone I know who has watched it insists it’s seen by all. So it rose up the list and we watched it with a packed out cinema on a hot summer’s day with others who have been told the same thing. Or it was just busy because it was 2for1 Wednesday. It’s a decent story; man has to save the world a giant dinosaur type monster invasion coming up from beneath the sea. The first time, it wipes out a fair few cities but the second time; the world is ready for it in the shape of giant robots (I’m not mentioning Transformers) operated by a human inside. They are overpowered too so a genius comes up with the idea of two people operating it who think as one, Jaeger pilots. We are introduced to twins who’s minds are merged as they are about to go to battle in the sea so each can operate their half of the machine by knowing what the other is thinking.Except the humans are still not winning and so the governments abandons the whole project to attach and hope to just protect. So we get ready to face the end of the world except we’re now in Hong Kong, for some added scenery and the Commander of the Jaegers ends up going rogue with the support of his staff to try to get the job done.So yes, a good story but for me it’s lacking in humour except for the unwitting mad scientist duo. There was a moment built for a one liner; two warriors return from a great battle and their boss makes all the right faces that would lead up to either an inspiring quote or a funny one liner but just said something like ‘good job.’So I’m not entirely with the ‘must-see’ brigade but sure worth a watch for imagination.7/10Smile 6/10Coffee rating: Espresso
