Movie: My Old Lady
Seen inflight – to VancouverI vaguely remember this being released but perhaps not majorly as I would have elected to see it.A divorced American, Mathias (Kevin Kline) inherits a property from his estranged father and while almost penniless arrives in Paris to claim it, only to find a legal sitting tenant. Played by Maggie Smith, she is allowed to be there under the terms of the deeds until her death, and she is getting on a bit. Mathias insensitively keeps enquiring about her age, hoping that she will peacefully shuffle off this mortal coil so he could go about selling the property, get himself sorted financially and go back to America.Of course it doesn’t quite work like that. The Old Lady has a middle-aged daughter living with her who does everything she can to stop the property being sold to developers who will 'spoil the neighbourhood'. Played by Kristin Scott Thomas, the daughter is raised in France but manages an impeccable English accent and is astonishingly uptight. I just wanted to say go and get your own place! The longer Mathias stays in the company of the old lady to try to work out how he can liquidate the huge asset and get back to New York, the more he learns about his father and their family secrets. The three actors amply carry this film to its conclusion.6½/10Smile 7/10@RickieWrites
