Movie - Mirror Mirror

If this is a girlie movie, what constitutes a male biased film, lots of naked women? Today, I’m back in my old-time slot of 3pm for the Friday afternoon film, as I knew the BF wouldn’t want to see this one (or be seen). For me it’s a delightful 2 hours escape to clear my head amidst hectic event planning duties.Anyway, this a kids film first and foremost, my second in a week. It’s the Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs fairy tale but in a very much modern take. In fact the only aspect from the original film is the era, which means everyone can dress up in ridiculous waist and hip enhancing frocks (yes, men too). There are spells cast but who’s to say these don’t exist in today’s world? Otherwise, it uses modern language – Julia Roberts is not typically but brilliantly cast as the wicked stepmother to the sickly sweet Snow White – and the royals still form marital alliances for moneyI’ve laughed several times before the opening credits and that’s all thanks to Ms Roberts’ delivery so I’m pleased to see the film continues in that vein throughout. These are the films that are enjoyed by children and those that are enjoyed by adults too because they are littered with innuendo and adult humour; this is the latter. (You always know when you’re watching a kiddie film as someone under 3 feet is perpetually walking down the steps towards the bathroom). The saccharine, orphaned Snow White finds herself having to (wo)’man up’ when after being locked up within the castle boundaries up until her 18th birthday, kindly staff finally point out that her step mother is wicked (not in a hip-hoppically good way) and that her people are starving. There is a prince, the dwarfs are there with different names (Grimm, Butcher, Wolf, Napoleon, Half Pint, Grub and Chuckles) and of course there is a fairytale ending (I’m not really spoiling it for you, am I?). The fairy tale story line will put many off but that’s a shame because it is an hour or so of escapism, exactly what a film should be.7½/10Smile factor 9½/10
