Movie: Last Vegas

Clearly a movie where all the best gags were used up in the trailer so this was just an exercise in seeing where they pop up. The other issue to be wary of was if Robert De Niro was going to be in good comedy. As it turns out, yes.But then he did play the dead pan man to the fun guy (Michael Douglas) the bored husband (Kevin Kline) and the molly coddled post–stroke (Morgan Freeman). In fact, they all played it straight, and I imagine, themselves, in this pensioners stag weekend comedy. The eternal bachelor Billy (Douglas) is finally getting married to a young women who somehow accepted his proposal made on impulse while he read out an eulogy (like I said, playing themselves). To celebrate, he wants to bring together his three lifelong friends from around the country who we are introduced to from when they were kids sticking up for each other in the playground.Only thing is the New Yorker Paddy (De Niro) has had a fall out with him and additionally has barely left his home since his wife of 40 years passed away. Similarly, Archie (Freeman) is wrapped up in cotton wool by his son after he’s had a stroke and kept in essentially a prison, so just like when he was six, he has to lie his way out of the house. Sam (Kline) is just a little bored with married life and looking for adventure and finds it when he and his pals get to throw a stag party for Billy in Vegas. That is a fairly classy affair after seeing Freeman hilariously get drunk/RedBull high at a club the night before. I know I found this a lot funnier than a 20 something would, being only 1 generation away from these guys rather than looking at them like they are my grandfathers and going eeeuuuww! They are all allowed to look their age and what I wasn’t anticipating was the feel good factor. I left the cinema and immediately found the track (also used with the same affect at one of the feel good films of last year, The Intouchables) that provided one of the highlights of film and stuck it on repeat in my ears while I danced all the way home.I now have to put it on again!
