Movie: Gravity

I’d seen the trailer so many times by the time I saw this, I had a pretty good idea it would be a lonely film with little characters. What I didn’t realise was what a beautiful, and mercifully short, film it is. There is only so much time you can spend with just Dr Ryan Stone floating about in space, on her first mission. Stone is played by Sandra Bullock who carries this film pretty much on her own with just (thankfully) brief on screen support from George Clooney who plays the experienced astronaut, Matt Kowalski, on his last mission. What you see in the trailer is Dr Stone being detached from her shuttle and thrown into space. We learn early on that Dr Stone lost her four-year old daughter so when the mission goes wrong as the Russians strike an old satellite and debris is floating everywhere; does she have the will to live on or take the easy option and disappear into the solar system? It’s just an amazing, film, totally unlike anything I have seen before and there is just enough dialogue to keep it moving along, despite there only really being one character, as radio communication is long-lost. It’s not as harrowing as Castaway with Tom Hank, which I could not bring myself to see on the big screen.Recommend seeing this on the big screen though, although I’m not sure if 3D really does add that much.8/10Smile factor 6/10Coffee rating Espresso
