Movie - Deepwater Horizon
I’m hazy about the facts of the real life oil disaster this film is based on. I remember the oil spill in America that was handled badly Shell. Deepwater Horizon is about the seemingly badly run oil drilling platform in the Gulf of Mexico. We are set up well from the off as we learn about the emotional ties of members of the skilled and experienced crew going off for a few weeks on the rig. The families back home clearly know how dangerous their job can be every time they walk out the door saying they will be back. Also coming on board is rig manager Mr Jimmy (Kurt Russell), clearly a hero amongst the crew, who is suspicious of the safety levels. He comes face to face to with a BP representative (John Malkovich) who insists all the checks have been done and it’s safe to drill.Although it felt like a slow start, the film needed all the crew banter and family life scenes to build up the tension which when it came, it stayed. The emotion is almost unbearable afterwards as we watch a child reunite with her father after all the drama. Often we keep going, take risks even, because of adrenalin. It’s only after the event, the pressure and therefore the emotion is released. My one moment of confusion is why alarm bells weren’t sounded when the accident first happened. It appeared the BP hierarchy was so penetrated, staff were reluctant to step outside protocol, even when it appeared to make more sense.BP, understandably have come out to say the truth is that multiple companies were to blame for the accident and everyone has learnt a lot since the worst oil disaster in history where 11 people died. With all the technology available to us, it’s people that make the decisions, and we can make mistakes.Tense.7½/10
