Movie: Blue Jasmine
I’m expecting at least one irritating character in a Woody Allen film, you know, one that talks over people, lets them down, is self-absorbed, that kind of thing.I’m pleased to say I’m not disappointed although Jasmine soon becomes less irritable. Our lead character has had a mighty fall from grace from socialite millionaire’s wife travelling around the world living in different homes to realising her husband is a Bernie Madoff type and not surprisingly to any of us, a cheat. We believe she turned a blind eye to both short comings in her husband Hal in order to continue with her 5 star lifestyle. The film takes us back to this life as Jasmine travels across the country to stay with her divorced sister, Ginger (who turns out to be the delightful Sally Hawkins) in a tiny apartment with two children in San Francisco. Ginger and ex-husband lost their life savings to and the one chance to ‘make it’ in one of Hal’s schemes so neither are best pleased to have to deal with the socialite’s plight.Wonderfully made with great casting (Alec Baldwin and Cate Blanchet as the ex-millionaires) and ultimately, up-lifting.Watch if you can.8/10Smile factor 8/10Coffee rating: Flat White
