Movie: All Is Lost

Oh wow, I’m so glad I caught this before the run ended. I had to go at the oh-so-late-time (for me) of 8.20pm but there was no way I was falling asleep during this frighteningly, intense movie.Robert Redford is the only actor, although you wouldn’t think so from the alarmingly long, I’m guessing deliberately, and often witty, credit list that I stayed back for. In the main, the intensity is from loud sound effects. He’s on his own and awakens to the sound of his boat crashing into a container, or something that is bobbing up and down in the sea that shouldn’t be. What follows, after trying to mend and make do, are the storms and we know soon enough that ‘our man’ has started to believe he is not going to survive. But that doesn’t mean he gives up in trying to fix the radio and trying to get the attention of passing ships’ attention, all the while no doubt broken-hearted at seeing his pride and joy wrecked in front of his eyes. I say no doubt because there are only a handful of words. The part adventure/thriller/action story is entirely told through Redford’s actions and the intensity of the sounds. An amazing film that holds you completely gripped with just a moving performance from ‘our man’.8/10Smile factor 4/10Coffee rating Americano
