Move: Interstellar
Film of the year? It’s a week of firsts; on Thursday I skipped out to my first visit to NIA, (to see the Damned and Motorhead – also firsts) and today is my first visit to an IMAX screen. Both are on my doorstep, I just never felt the need before. I’m uncertain if my enjoyment of the film would have been lessened watching this on a regular screen but my boyfriend insisted on the IMAX and I don’t have a comparison, unless I see this again, which is perfectly possible.Although a lot longer at 169 minutes, I imagined Interstellar to be like Gravity but with more footage on earth. I came away not even thinking of the sci-fi element, just the human story.
A love story for mankind
Cooper, (Matthew McConaughey) having lost his wife is bringing up his two children with the help of their maternal grandfather. They are living at time when earth is no longer able to cope as dust storms desolate crops. Cooper is a forma NASA pilot and engineer and like most other people, is now a farmer, trying to grow enough food to keep the earth’s population going.Cooper is chosen as the best man to lead a mission to find other planets for the earth’s population to live on (or plan B, to start another population) by head of what is left of a secret NASA (Michael Caine). I don’t understand why, knowing he may never come back, there wasn’t more time to spend with his family, helping them understand why he had to go. His youngest, daughter Murph, the budding scientist took it harder than her older brother although father tells her potentially, he could come back the same age as her due to – well, literally timing moving at a difference pace on other planets.Within minutes he is on board with his crew of three and two stats of the show, robots TARS and CASE. They go into black holes, move through worm holes and a lot more to find the three remaining pilots of 12 who had been sent out some years before. It turns out in this sci-fi, the crew go into long sleeps in coffin-like pods to while away years in space rather than, I don’t know, read books. Saves on food I guess. It was fascinating to be immersed in different time zones, where Earths hour could translate to years.Of course the pictures of space are amazing but even more so is the story; love really does conquer all. Explain that scientists! Top 3 film of 2014 for sure9/10Smile factor 9/10
