Globe Trotting B List
Dublin 1997 ♥
Guinness, Music, Oscar Wilde.I came. I saw. I never went back. It got A list status as I went with a boyfriend who was from there but in reality it was B list.Nashville 2004 ♥♥♥♥+ 2 words: Glen Campbell. As a youngster, I was familiar with Glen Campbell, Dolly Parton and Tammy Wynette but it wasn’t till I heard Chris Evans playing Campbell’s Country Boy c1990-2 on local London radio that I realised I liked country music. So that’s 2 more words: Chris Evans.I did the whole music tour and stayed in New Orleans (pre-Katrina) and Memphis (post-Elvis) but I’m still a country girl at heart. As we got closer, the music got progressively more country on our luxury tour bus, Rhinestone Cowboy, Galveston and finally Wichita Lineman by which time I was in tears as the hype had taken over and I walked down Nashville Main Street on a cloud of stardust. Visiting the Ryman Auditorium, the afternoon of learning at the Country Hall of Fame and then seeing loads of artists at the Grand Ole Opry threw me over the edge. I have never recovered.New England 2003 ♥♥♥♥1/2 I wanted to see real small town American so I went to (New) England. I even had my spare bedroom decorated in the New England style I imagined, mint green with red gingham curtains which was pretty much how quaintly beautiful it was. I loved Providence (near New Bedford – one of many in America) and completely fell in love with Rhode Island, especially Newport and all its old mansions in Kennedy, or rather Jackie O country, but just travelling through the region out of New York and seeing the famous colours of the fall was amazing.Rockies 1998 ♥♥♥♥1/2 What was meant to be on the B List got promoted as it was part of my Vancouver trip. Each day the views got more achingly beautiful as we got deeper into the mountains. A deserved promotion.San Francisco 2007 ♥♥♥♥1/2 ‘One night in a disco in the outskirts of Frisco, I was cruisin’ with my favourite gang’, Sister Sledge, Greatest Dancer. That and the whole creative, beat nick, hippy chic, flowers in the hair thing meant I finally had to drag myself to the otherwise disliked west coast of America. The last of the B list, I would say it’s now my third home. It’s really awkward to have three homes 3000 miles apart.
