Film - The Lighthouse

If they can manage or a non-grey version of a Dickens story in The Personal History of David Copperfield, they could have put just one little glimmer of hope in this bleak turn of the century tale.

Based in New England (but filmed up across the border in Nova Scotia) the story of two lighthouse keepers who have to stay way beyond their four weeks of isolation is the most miserable thing I have seen on the big screen for years. Not to take away from brilliant film-making, it makes Parasite look like a comedy farce, which it is in parts. Interesting that we had the same trailers for both films.

It is a stark reminder of the dark days before mental health was a term. Hell, in these days, health didn’t even matter as we watch two already lost souls locked together on an island slowly lose their minds.

Shot in black and white, if I’d seen it described as a psychological horror, I may not have watched it. The Lighthouse is brilliant all round but I cannot unsee it now.

4/10
