Film - Parallel Mothers
As unsettling as any other Pedro Almodóvar film I’ve seen, Parallel Mothers has some overlapping stories. In the main, the title refers to two new mothers sharing a hospital room. Both are unplanned, one is young and scared, the other is happy to have an accidental pregnancy at 40. Both have the means so money is not an issue here but their stories are very different.
I would have loved to know more about Janis’ (Penélope Cruz) history and her campaign to excavate a mass grave in her home town, and that’s a whole oher film about the Spanish Civil War.
Parallel Mothers goes where I thought it would go when two babies are born at the same time and as usual in Almodóvar films, sexuality is explored. But still, the Spanish Civil War story is what I would have preferred to learn about.
