Film - Okja (2017)
Instead of going to the cinema on a Friday, I’m doing what I do most often on a plane, find an international film I’ve never heard of and love it. I’ve seen so many this way and Maudie, Pattie Cake$ and The Lunch Box, spring to my mind.
Okja is the first of those. An action-adventure with fear and hope oozing out in equal measures as we meet Mija and her genetically modified super pig Okja.
Living on a farm, Mija has never known life without Okja and obviously had no idea that she was going to be returned to her owner after10 years to be turned into meat. Now she’s fearlessly fighting for her best friend who she refers to as her little sister.
She is aided by animal rights activists with sometimes questionable - though on occasion - understandable behaviour. There is no sympathy though for the heartlessness of from the Mirando Corporation and their head (the monstrous Tilda Swinton) who created these creatures in a lab and then let them out to farmers to nurture them
Okja had me glued to the small screen and filled me with hope. And not want to eat ham.
