Film - MisBehaviour
In our house, we were obsessed with Miss World as much as everyone else. I’m not old enough to remember these events in 1970 but I’m sure if my family would have seen it, we would have been irritated by these protesters spoiling our viewing of the biggest show on earth. How our mindset has changed.
MisBehaviour is headed up by chief protestor Sally (Keira Knightley) The other protestors irritated me *whereas she seemed to be doing it for the right reason with a lot more to lose (relationship and child). Sally held her own with very a good argument on TV (something like Question Time) where she questioned why should women have to parade themselves and be judged on their looks whereas men don’t. A point still very much try 50 years later even though most of us agree with her.
*I found the character Jessie Buckley played most irritating, probably as it seemed identical to the character she played in Wild Rose, my least favourite film in recent years.
I remember the Morleys who ran the show as tthey were household names when I grew up, although I don’t recall Mr Morely being as flamboyant as is portrayed. Still, he added humour. In later years, I wondered why a woman would be behind one of the single most sexist things on TV. Like I said, how mindsets change over time.
MisBehaviour stayed on the gentle side of proceedings whereas it could have gone much darker by handling the issues of abuse and racism on top of the sexism although it did delve into Apartheid. This means more people can watch and learn. For example, I didn’t know anything about the two South African entries in 1970 so this was very much an eye-opener.
Great title.
