Film - Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga
During the lockdown when any laugh is appreciated much more than at any time in our life, I agreed to watch this. The story of Iceland’s Lars and Sigrit who have dreamt only of winning Eurprivision since they were kids is silly enough to give us a boost and remind us, should we have forgotten, how ludicrous the contest is. They manage to get to the final by default while we see flashbacks to their young lives to set the stage.
Not being a Eurovision fan since the days of three TV channels and little choice, I spotted Graham Norton but the cameo’s from (apparent) former Eurovision stars was all lost on me. I appreciate others would be joyously clapping away in front of their small screens though.
Eurovision Song Contest highlights every cliche of the global phenomena with gemstones on and yet still we go with it. It took me a while to see Rachel McAdams and Will Ferrell as a couple - they seem more like a brother and sister although he looks like he could be her Dad. This proves not to biologically possible in real life. In the same way, I wasn’t sure Pierce Brosnan could be Ferrel’s Dad either - ‘my extremely handsome father’ - although he is a welcome addition to the large cast.
I may not be a Eurovision superfan but I am a Hudson Bay geek and I’m pretty sure I spotted the Canadian brand’s signature coat on Ferrel. It is a comedy so we have to forgive the fact that a huge stadium can not sit in the centre of Edinburgh across the road from the castle and that you can’t fly in and out of Iceland without taking a day doing it but there are laughs and a few tears to get past that.
