Film: Conclave

The pope has passed away, and international cardinals are gathering at the Vatican to elect a new one. Cardinal Lawrence (played by Ralph Fiennes), a principled figure, oversees the proceedings and navigates the egos and secrets of the competing bishops. He is friends with another candidate, Aldo Cardinal Bellini, (played by Stanley Tucci), who holds a liberal stance. In contrast, he faces opponents with archaic views and one who is openly against homosexuality.

The dangerous men are the ones who do want it.

(Reminds me of one of my favourite quotes, the best leaders never want to lead).

One of the first surprises is when the Cardinal of Kabul who no one has ever met or even heard of, turns up. Then other secrets surrounding the Pope’s last wishes and actions start appearing and this becomes part whodunnit, part political drama.

With a strong cast, this one moment in time becomes intricate and complicated.

If there is no mystery, there is no need for faith

I’ve never heard the term concave before so, I’ve learnt something new too.
