Film - Booksmart
The story of two hard-studying teenage best friends who realise on the last day of school that all the people they thought of as losers have also got into good colleges. As it turns out they’ve sacrificed fun for study for no reason, the film chronicles this night like the one they are going to cram in the fun before they part to start their adult lives.
Throw into the mix who they’ve secretly had crushes on through High school, one of them is gay, one is school president and there is a whole heap of back stories as we follow the pair trying to get to the party to end all parties.
I watched this while in the middle of reading Carries Diaries which is about a group of teenagers in the same stage of life although in the 1980s so no GPS, internet or Insta. I have to keep checking my facts as I get the characters entwined, only the book is based in the 1980s where there no social media, something Booksmart is very much reliant on.
I was hesitant as I feared this may be just a teen move although many could learn some lessons from Booksmart. Oh, and it’s the stunning directorial debut of Oliver Wilde.
