Film - A Secret Love

Amid shifting times, two women kept their decades-long love a secret. But coming out later in life comes with its own set of challenges.

A beautiful documentary about two women, Terri and Pat growing up in Canada and then moving to America to keep their love a secret. They never married anyone else, just quietly lived together with an unbreakable bond. They only told their families after enjoying six decades together, as they wondered what would happen to them in old age. Directed by their great-nephew, we have a personal insight into their lives as they plan where they are going to live for their twilight years.

I found it odd that they felt safer in conservative America than liberal Canada, even in the 40s. I guess moving to a Chicago, gave them more freedom as they didn’t stand out as much than in their rural homeland. they feared being deported back there if the authorities found out they weren’t in fact cousins.

I loved seeing images of Terri playing baseball in the 40s for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League - it makes me want to watch A League of Their Own, the film based on these women baseball players.

As always, love wins.
