Film: 20th Century Women
Based in 1979, this is the story of a mother, her teenage son and some home truths.Worried that she since the divorce when Jamie was still young he’s not getting all the parenting he needs, Dorothea (Annette Bening) decides to bring in some reinforcement. It doesn’t quite go to plan; the first 20th century woman is Julie, Jamie’s slightly older best friend from childhood who he happens to be in love with. The second is 20 something year old lodger, photographer Abbie. Both of these 20th century women are fighting their own demons, mainly, it seems caused by their own mothers.Being 1979, there are some interesting moments exploring the punk music of the time, politics and overall, feminism. It’s always great to see a strong lady on screen. She originally wanted to be pilot but war happened and eventually she had her baby in the 1960s at the age of 40. I couldn’t help thinking Anette Benning’s character looked older than the 55 year old character, but maybe that’s just me. Mostly the film is quirky, fun and enjoyable although maybe 20 minutes too long.7/10
