Book: Really Good, Actually by Monica Heisey
‘A side-splitting debut novel about a young divorcee stepping back into the world that fizzes with knockout one-liners and hilarious characters.’
No.
Maybe I’ve read one book too many on women coming out of relationships but heart-warming and funny this ain’t. Mildly amusing sometimes, perhaps.
Taking nothing from the author's excellent ability to weave the story together with several similarly-minded characters. Only in films (usually) is a group of apparently socially busy friends able to drop everything and get together at a moment’s notice and turn up. Also, only in a book will everyone turn their back on you when you’re in a post-separation crash and behaving out of character.
I’ve now learnt that the author is a Schitts Creak scriptwriter. I’m glad I didn’t know that before as my expectations would have been high. Maybe - just MAYBE - I’d relate more if I was 30 years old
However, I’m pleased to be reading a book set in Canada although it took me a couple of chapters to recognise Toronto - where I will be again in a few short weeks. Quite long at 370 pages, although a much-needed bit of light reading.
