Book: On the Rooftop by Margaret Wilkerson Sexton
The story follows Vivian and her three daughters, detailing her journey as a single mother after losing her husband. With the support of her neighbour, who is also a single mother, Vivian goes back to school and becomes a nurse to provide a better life for her kids. The daughters are part of a popular jazz band, and while Vivian seeks opportunities for them, they question if this is the path they truly want to pursue.
Set in San Francisco, this is the post-war period - I’m guessing 50s. We also get to know about the black community being threatened by the rich white folk who want to buy up their properties for the lucrative land they sit on.
An original story with a big cast of characters that will have you reaching for the Jazz standards.
A random find in the library that drew me in from the synopsis.
