Book - Happy Families by Julie Ma

I have a small list of authors from which I will read new books; Edward Rutherfurd, Anne Tyler, Annie Murray, and most local ones.

Now Julie Ma has joined the list.

This book came with a pile that I paid about £85 for at an auction for vaccines and Julie kindly signed it for me. It’s the one that intrigued me to part with my cash and the only one I have read so far.

Happy Families is an engaging history lesson wrapped in a story set in modern times. Amy takes us through the loves and lives of three generations of a Chinese family living in a fictional small town in South Wales. One of the secrets we are waiting to find out about is why Amy has moved back to live in the flat above the family Chinese takeaway business with her grandfather, who provides much of the humour.

I loved dipping in out of Chinese and Welsh culture and learning about people who can speak Mandarin and Welsh, but English, not so much. I laughed out loud many times and the mention of Raspberry Pi sure made me smile.

I can’t wait for the next book!
