Book: Feminists Don't Wear Pink and other lies curated by Scarlett Curtis
I bought this to support the project after I found out its big launch in Top Shop Oxford Circus was cancelled by the store at the last minute. That was a couple of years ago and I’ve finally picked this up from the coffee table.
The rumour was that I must have slept with someone to get the job
I am one of those who’ve long resisted from calling myself a feminist so, in a way, this book was curated for me to bring me back. I wrote an article long ago on that subject as I disliked how being a feminist ha become to mean helping or supporting other women whereas I see it as helping all beings. Everyone is equal and I can’t abide sisters are doing it for themselves.
While I don’t like everything in Feminists Don’t Wear Pink - I’m past the age by some decades when I was happy to be told what to think - the book is a good viewpoint on what women are currently thinking. I’m disappointed by Madonna being missed from the playlist when she has several feminist anthems on every album. I like this definition from Beyonce though: feminist: a person who believes in the social, political and economic equality of the sexes and there are others that support my viewpoint that I’ve book marked.
I’m wondering if there is a novel written in a parallel universe, where it’s the men that are concerned about going out alone at night or to walk into a bar or wondering if they are getting paid less for doing the same job? There’s got to be, right?
A standout story is the most surprising one from Keira Knightley. I had to stop and digest this one. In the main, it’s gently thought-provoking and it takes feminism back to where I believe it started. From the suffragettes wanting equal voting rights to the 70s feminists who wanted equal rights for all.
There are so many post-suffragette movements included from ‘FreePeriods to #MeToo. This could be the most useful book to give to men as they would learn the most from it. Even those you may consider feminist men and why would you hang out with any that aren’t?
