Book: A Three Dog Life by Abigail Thomas

I found this at an Oxfam shop, attracted by the word dog in the title. In any case, I always aim to buy a book there. I can always return to a charity shop if I don't want to keep it.

…but they were writers and writers suggest things just to see what happens next.

The synopsis states it’s about someone whose husband is left with a shattered brain after being hit by a car and how the author Abigail Thomas builds her life afterwards.

It is about that, although we see less of her writer husband, whose memory is all but wiped and more of her new life. Let’s face it, their lives are privileged. They live in Manhattan, her husband goes into a care home full time for the rest of his life and Abigail Thomas is able to buy a whole other house in upstate New York while keeping their apartment. All sustained by doing a bit of teaching. So there is that.

There is guilt as her husband took the dog out that she wanted rather than him and that same dog survives and is what helped her grieve afterwards.

Otherwise, it is touching in parts, surprising in others and the dogs don’t figure as much as I’d hoped. A sweet memoir/Memoriam.
